The best way to spend your time, without actually spending any money, might be in playing one of many free to play games that are sometimes just as good as the game you originally wanted. All of these games and their respective companies are mostly sustaining themselves through micro transactions; they are all free to download and play. Who knows, you might just hit the right one and stick with it.
10. World Of Tanks
I know, I know, it is annoying how many commercials of this game we have all seen, but hear me out. World of Tanks is a free to play game for Microsoft Windows, Xbox One and PS4. Yes, you can play World of tanks for free on PS4. If you don’t know what it is, it is a massively played online shooter (sort of) developed by Wargaming company from Belarus. It is placed in the middle of 20th century and instead of a playable character you usually use in first or third person shooters, here you use heavy combat vehicles – the Tanks (big surprise, right?). All jokes aside, this game has brought me hours of fun because of the really interesting mechanics and gameplay. Although you can play the game for free, there are unlockable options if you are willing to spend some real money, but you can play the entire game without ever opening your wallet, and that’s what matters the most. It might not be the perfect game to obsess with such as the other titles on this list, but I found World of tanks to be relaxing and perfect to kill some time in a match or two a day. The combat system is rather easy since you mostly just drive around in a tank, shooting other people who also drive tanks, but the tactics can be extremely complicated if you are willing to claim your victory with more than brute strength. Even though this game might be annoying because all of the advertising, it might be worth checking out because of the fun gameplay and the variety of vehicles you can unlock for yourself.
9. Pro Evolution Soccer 28 Lite Version
Finally, a free to play for the PS4 version of PES2018 is here, Pro Evolution Soccer 2018 Lite! PES 2018 Lite is a scaled down free to play version of PES 2018 using the full myClub experience from this year’s game. Originally developed by Konami, just as the other versions of Pro Evolution Soccer, PES 18 lite offers Konami’s fantasy version of soccer for free. You don’t get all the perks and abilities you would from buying the game, but when it comes to killing time while waiting for the next big release, this game is a master of it. The best thing is that you can actually play with people who purchased the game, without spending sixty bucks for it. It is a scaled down version, that is true, but it is just that good. The game keeps the superior graphics of full PES 18 version. Make your own team of legendary super players so you have the edge over the other players. If you are a fan of Pro Evolution Soccer games but currently unable to spend money on it, this game delivers a great experience for the right price – for free.
8. Gwent: The Witcher Card Game
Have you played Witcher 3? Did you like the card game within a game? Gwent is a flushed out, standalone modern classic that is based on the turn-based card game between two players, and the fans of Witcher will recognize and most likely love it. Inspired by similar titles like Magic: The Gathering or Hearthstone, Gwent The Witcher Card Game, developed by CD Project is a unique game where you have to use tactics to either overpower or trick your opponent in order to win. With the cross-platform feature the worthy opponent is guaranteed, and it is free to play on Play Station 4 since December of 2018. Considering it is a rather new and unique game, starting as soon as possible would most definitely give you the edge over the other players that aren’t there since the start. It also features a single-player campaign mode, Thornbreaker: The Witcher tales. Dive into the amazing lore, heroes, and monsters that hide within the cards of Gwent, and don’t forget to have fun.
7. Dc Universe ONLINE
A game that has seen a lot of controversies when it comes to quality and yet still managed to survive and come on top of the situation. Maybe not the best game of the genre, but certainly one of the best Superhero MMO games, DC Universe Online brings a lot of amazing gameplay and hours of fun. Play with popular DC heroes or villains and create your own unique character. The customizing options are just amazing in this game. Some of us dreamed of fighting alongside Batman or Superman as a standalone hero or even fighting against them as a feared and respected villain, and this game delivers upon that dream. The abilities such as flight, super speed or just cool and amazing gadgets give a unique appeal to this game. One of my favorite things about DC Universe Online is the actual participation in the story, which is amazing by itself, but I won’t spoil it for you. While playing DC Universe with other players, you can really feel like a part of something greater than yourself, no matter how powerful you actually are. Be a hero and save the world, or be a villain and rule over it. Or just destroy it; there are a lot of Joker fans here, I myself included.
6. H1Z1: Battle Royale
Yet another battle royal game that comes to our list, H1Z1: Battle Royale is a bit different than it’s a more popular counterpart. Developed by Daybreak Game Company, H1Z1 brings a bit more serious and realistic gameplay to the Playstaion4, and the best part is, it’s free! See what it feels like to be running for your life, searching for weapons just so you can be the one chasing and attacking instead of being the prey. Prefer a more passive approach? Get a sniper and lie still, waiting for your target to show his head behind the corner so you can surprise him with a sudden gray screen and a sense of shame because he wasn’t careful enough. Run like a soldier, avoiding enemy crossfire and spraying led all over your opponents so you can be what you truly are, a king of the hill. Play solo or with your friends so you can corner down the enemy groups and show them how much better you are. Also, there is one thing that we all dreamed of doing, a weapon of mass destruction that spells DOOM for your enemies. The weapon so feared, even the bravest of us shiver when we are about to use it – the frying pan!
5. Warframe
Have you ever wanted to play a Shooter – MMO hybrid game without spending a dime? Then Warframe is a game for you. This third-person cooperative shooter has been around for a while now, and it is still going strong. Digital Extremes really gave their best while developing this game that you can basically play for free on PS4 now, without feeling any pressure to purchase anything or actually spend any real money. The game might seem like a loot grind, but a loot grind well done that brings along hours upon hours of fun playing your favorite class. What can be better than playing as a Teno, a race of ancient warriors (space cyborg ninjas included but there are plenty of other classes to choose from, this one just looks the edgiest for me) in a science fiction game that goes toe to toe with Destiny, a massive giant in this genre. Although not getting the attention it deserves, Warframe has an amazing community combined with super cool looks of pretty much everything. The graphics are amazing, the gameplay is fast and skill based and in my modest opinion, the game is really worth checking out, especially since it is free. Pick up your technologically advanced sword or a bow and start slashing the enemies with yet unseen ferocity!
4. Paladins
Paladins is a hero based shooter developed by Hi-Rez Studios, the same company that developed Smite. On the first look, you may think this game resembles Overwatch, and there have been many debates about it, but Paladins brings something unique to the table, despite being so similar to Blizzard’s favorite shooter. This is a team based game where you have to rely on your reflexes, skills and the general knowledge of every hero in order to succeed in gaining victory for your team. With more than thirty playable characters to choose from, you know you can find the one that suits your style. Although only six of them are available from the start, four of the offered six change every two weeks so you can try out the new characters when they are free to play. Since this is a free to play PS4 game, they have developed a system where you can buy a certain character with real money so he would become available all of the time, but that’s optional, in case you really fall in love with a certain hero. There is also a unique card system in Paladins that gives you the ability to change or improve your character so you can maximize the efficiency while still playing your favorite gun-blazing champion.
3. Smite
Smite is a free to play Multiplayer Online Battle Arena game published by Hi-Rez Studios for Microsoft Windows, Mac, Play Station 4, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One. It is an amazing game with a very unique play stile when compared to other games of the genre. Even though Smite is a bit older game, the developers are constantly working on it to make it better. Smite has had quite a few changes throughout the history, all towards the smoother playstyle and better gameplay. The roster of champions and heroes for Smite is inspired by the various Gods and legendary champions thought the history. If you are a fan of mythology (Such as Greek, Egyptian, Norse or Chinese), you might just find the perfect hero or god for yourself in Smite. All of the champions are unique and every single one of them has something to bring to the team, and there are a large number of abilities that make this game one of the most entertaining games of the genre. I myself like the 3rd person camera you just don’t see in other MOBA games and it brings a fresh new perspective on these games. Even if you are sick of MOBA games such as League of Legends or DOTA2, Smite still has a unique sense of gameplay which feels different than the previously mentioned games.
2. Brawlhalla
If you are a fan of old-style games and Smash Bros, you have to check out our next entry on the list, the game that carries with itself tons of fun whether you are playing solo or with friends. Brawlhalla is a fast-paced, mind-blowing 2D brawl and fall platform game developed by Blue Mammoth Games with amazing graphics that either just click with you or don’t. Enter the arena and defeat your opponents with your speed, strength, and wits and be the last one standing on the platform. The game’s graphics are really polished and the controls are easy to learn, but the game itself takes some time to master. With the vast number of playable characters, this game guarantees you find a pixelated version of yourself to knock other people off the platform and ultimately dominate the battleground with your awesomeness. Brawlhalla is a free to play PS4 game with a giant and friendly community so you are sure to get instructions both in-game and on the internet. They have a dedicated wiki page so you can explore the vast lore of the characters. Fight the greatest warriors in history. Find your favorite legendary brawler, or discover new ones. Be the Jack-of-all-Trades and play anything that can be played or just master your own character with a unique playstyle and looks so you can become a legend yourself. The choice is yours, now all that is left is for you to pick your favorite hero in this free to play PS4 game, and brawl!
1. Fortnite: Battle Royale
Fortnite Battle Royale is a game developed by Epic Games. It is a free to play a battle royal game where you are stranded on the island with other 99 players, and the goal is to be the last player standing. Fortnite brings some new mechanics to the table and many other games are trying to copy that mechanics in order to gain popularity. The building mechanic Fortnite introduced has proven to be a powerful ally when it comes to many shooters, because there is nothing better than building a cover for yourself when in the middle of the combat, showered with array of enemy led and then outbuilding the enemy so you leave him trapped in a wooden or metal box. Wait for him to get out and shoot him in the head for the ultimate domination of the post-apocalyptic world of Fortnite. A unique, somewhat cartoonish graphics really make this game stand out from the competitors like one of the most popular games in 2018, even though the game came out in 2016. There are some unique skins through in-game purchases and rewards, but the core game is free and the items you buy for real-life currency are only visual upgrades that we all want, but deep down we know we don’t need. This means there are no buy-to-win mechanics we all learned to hate, depending on our pockets. If you are a fan of a fast-paced 3rd person shooter in a game where you have to be fast and creative to win, I suggest you try Fortnite: Battle Royale, it might bring you hours upon hours of fun, stress, adrenaline rushes and a sense of accomplishment when you finally be “the last man standing”.
Conclusion
This was our list of the top 10 free to play games on PlayStation 4. The games were rated by the popularity and overall quality of gameplay. All of the games are completely free to download and play on you PlayStation, though some of them may have the pay-to-win options nobody likes. Most of the games have everything accessible either through real-life money purchase or gameplay and grind. I have played all of the games for the research, and I must say, I will continue to play many of them in the future.
